There’s an amazing display of geekery at Norwescon, which is part of why it’s so exciting to attend each year. We are excited to share ten geeky things we saw that you may not expect.
1. Charity Fandom War
Sure, the competitors are staples of scifi/fantasy fandom, but what makes it great is that there are large denominations in those glasses! It’s wonderful to see giving geeks.
2. Masquerade Photography
There is so much geek in this photo from the Maleficent cosplayer to the photographer wearing a kilt and Chuck Taylors. But what’s really great is that shadow. How awesome is that?
3. A lost anti-gnome sticker
What does it mean? Other than “no gnome,” of course.
4. An ignorant Jon Snow
Someone was kind enough to provide this cardboard cut out with some dialog.
5. Free Game
These two games — a Neo Geo and a pinball machine — were never seen vacant.
6. The Haunted Mansion stockings of a geeky ukelele musician
Molly Lewis plays geeky songs on a ukelele but at Norwescon she was also sporting leggings whose pattern adorns the wallpaper of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. Geeky indeed!
7. Thai Food
GeekyLibrary essentially runs on Thai food so naturally we took a Thai food lunch break at Norwescon. Very quickly after we were seated, George R. R. Martin and company found a table in the same restaurant which means GeekyLibrary and GRRM both run on Thai food.
8. The creepy eyes of the 10th Doctor
They legitimately follow you everywhere.
9. A solid silvery rocket statue
You don’t even need to know that it’s a demonstration Hugo award for it to be awesome.
10. The Iron Throne
Seeing a replica Iron Throne is super geeky. But even better is getting to sit in it!

Did you attend Norwescon? Share your photos and the unexpected geeky things you saw.
And not only were those Chuck Taylors, but they’re _Superman_ Chucks! I know, ’cause I’m the one wearing ’em. 😉
That makes everything so much better.
No kidding? That’s awesome!
The same guy brings a couple different games each year from his collection. Totally free, totally volunteer. It’s a true labor of love, and we’re delighted that Todd Clark shares his joy with us all. 🙂
Todd, if you’re reading this, on behalf of little kids and big kids who spent Norwescon in the hallway between Evergreen and Cascade, thank you.
The Maleficient cosplayer was in the Masquerade, she is 9 years old and helped her Mom, Melissa Quinn, with making the outfit.
I didn’t get a close up look at it, but the silhouette was amazing. A commendable job! Any idea if it placed in the contest?
its when you have the Dalek on the right hand of the person sitting in the iron throne…. ready to conquer the world
Indeed!
“Fear cuts deeper than swords.”
OW! Check the orientation on the pictures! At least one is upside down and at least two are rotated.
Oh no!
They look okay in my desktop browser, but then I checked my phone — where they were taken — and yeah, they’re all goofball. We’ll see about getting those fixed up asap. Thanks for the heads up.
