Armada: The alien invasion videogame is one of the most popular in the world, and Zack Lightman just happens to be one of the best. Too bad being good at videogames isn’t exactly a useful life skill. Or is it?

“I often tried to calm myself with Yoda’s voice (which sounded nothing like Fozzie Bear, damn you) during moments of distress.”

Under threat of alien invasion, Zack is recruited along with other gamers to defend earth. And although the stakes are higher, the scenario is eerily similar to the classic sci-fi stories Zack grew up with.

Why is this on our bookshelf?

Are you hoping for some geeky science fiction references? Then you won’t be disappointed. Geeky main character Zack with his sci-fi loving ways could totally be our pal. Also, Ernest Cline is the author of the hugely popular Ready Player One, an essential book on the GeekyLibrary shelves.

Rating (4 stars)

Filled with geek culture references guaranteed to make readers smile, Armada is the perfect summer read.

It’s entertaining, sure, but feels familiar. This isn’t surprising— the history of alien invasion movies, science fiction stories and timeline of videogames all plays an important part in the books plot. If you’re a science fiction fan like me, this is a lot of fun. If you aren’t, some references will go over your head.

If you want some good old-fashioned alien invasion entertainment, this book is it. There might be a hint of deeper meaning towards the end, but only a hint, largely forgettable in the wake of videogame-style sci-fi battles. Bring on the drones!
